Nintendo 3DS
Launch Years: NA: 2011, EU: 2011, JP: 2011
The 3DS is the DS on steroids, with the main gimmick being the stereoscopic 3D slider. The 3D effect is unique, as you don't need 3D glasses to experience the effect. While the 3D is neat, I very rarely use the feature as it tends to boil my retinas. On occasion, I'll enable the 3D effect to see what a game area looks like with it. I'll see the effect, say "neat", then turn it back off.
A later revision of the 3DS, known as the 2DS, plays every game that a regular 3DS can play, but lacks the stereoscopic 3D. If you're looking to play 3DS games without the 3D gimmick, the 2DS is the cheaper alternative that you'll want to go with.
Nintendo also came out with an upgraded revision, known as the "new" series of 3DS and 2DS. There were like, 2 exclusive cartridges for this platform, but there were some new 3DS games that would utilize the added C-stick nub. Majoras Mask 3D is one example I can think of which is completely playable without the C-stick, but the C-stick does provide the option of traditional camera control to those who have one. The New 3DS was slightly more powerful than a standard 3DS, and the 3D effect was improved to be viewable at different angles (if you care about that).
Returning from the DSi is a revamped home menu as well as the e-shop (which is now shut down). Sadly, my beloved pictochat is absent. DS games are backwards compatible on the 3DS.
The 3DS that I own today is my childhood system, so I have a lot of great images and sound recordings to laugh at. I've been carrying this thing around since 2011.
