The Nintendo DS features dual screens, one of which (the lower one) is touch sensitive. There is also a microphone, which is reminiscent of the microphone that is featured on Famicom's player-2 controller. The original DS and DS-lite are both backwards compatible with the Gameboy Advance, with a built-in GBA slot on the front of the console. This slot is also used for some accessories, such as the guitar hero controller. The DSi would remove this slot.
I consider the DSi to be part of the original DS lineage, although it is sort of its own beast. It has very few exclusive game carts, but it does have a digital storefront and different user interface. There is also a built-in camera, as well as the ability to use color in pictochat.
All DS's could utilize pictochat (a local chat program for nearby DS systems) as well as download play, which allowed users to play local multiplayer. Some games, such as Mario Kart DS, even allowed players without a copy of the game to play as long as the host had a copy of the game.
